I asked the President of Microsoft, "Can AI be regulated?" This is what he said.

AI can't be stopped. The idea of taking a six-month pause never made any sense because it was not going to happen.

Originally, when this broke at the beginning of the year, I felt it was important that people take it seriously. That's happening. A day doesn't go by when I don't see AI in the news in some form or another. But there are two distinct issues...

  1. As AI reaches the intelligence of an average person, it could ultimately grow beyond that to superintelligence, where it's smarter than all of us put together. I do think that will ultimately happen in the not-so-distant time frame.
  2. To ensure we don't have a Terminator outcome, we have to make sure that the values of AI are consistent and coherent with human values. If we do that, we could see an incredible period of growth in humanity.

So, AI is a very powerful tool, and like every other tool created by humanity, it will be used for every possible purpose. The good, the bad, and, unfortunately, the evil. If somebody builds a deep fake that perfectly represents me in every way, shape, and form and posts this on YouTube saying things I don't believe, that needs to be illegal.

I think people should have the creativity to do that as long as they don't misrepresent what they're doing.
